CitiPark launches Designated Driver campaign

June2018

Leading car park operator, CitiPark (a subsidiary of Town Centre Securities) has teamed up with both Leeds and Watford BID’s to offer free soft drinks for designated drivers during World Cup 2018

A number of venues in Watford and Leeds will be taking part, including Walkabout, The Pit, Colombia Press and Shooters Bar. The promotion will run for the duration of the World Cup, from 14th June to 15th July.

The facts about drink driving

The consumption of alcohol has become firmly embedded in British culture, where 23% of men and 18% of women report weekly consumption above recommended guidelines and alcohol-related hospital admissions in England alone have risen to 1.2 million. (Source: Alcohol Concern, ‘Statistics on Alcohol’, May 2014).

Over time, football and alcohol have become closely entwined at all levels, and officially endorsed. The English, Welsh and Scottish Football Associations, for example, all have formal partnerships with leading beer companies and for many fans, drinking is a central component to the match day experience.

With a total of 64 matches due to take place across 32 days during the World Cup, the leisure industry is set to capitalise on this summer’s biggest sporting event. It is reported that during the lead-up to the FIFA World Cup in 2010, Carlsberg, the official sponsor of the England football team, expected an extra 21 million pints to be drunk during the tournament.

So how does the scheme work?

When customers park in any of CitiPark’s car parks in Leeds or Watford to watch a World Cup match at their chosen nearby pub or bar, all they have to do is pre-book their parking space via the CitiPark website and then simply show their pre-booking confirmation email at the bar/pub participating in the promotion, to claim their free soft drink(s)* during the match. Alternatively, they can pay for their parking on the day and use their parking receipt to qualify for free soft drinks. It’s a win-win!

Charlotte-Daisy Ziff, Head of CSR at Town Centre Securities, owner of CitiPark, said: “It’s important to us as a responsible and forward-thinking car parking operator to play a key role in raising awareness of the dangers of drink driving during periods of increased drinking, such as the World Cup, as well as promoting Leeds and Watford as safe and responsible destinations”

Martin Dickson, Head of Marketing at LeedsBID, said: “We are delighted to be partnering with CitiPark on this campaign which sees city centre businesses collaborating to encourage people to act responsibly while out enjoying all the action of the World Cup and to help ensure people can get home safely.”

John Gautrey, Chief Operating Officer at CitiPark, said: “We are very pleased to team up with all of these local pub and bar chains, to demonstrate that we care about all drivers and want designated drivers to have as enjoyable an experience during the World Cup as everyone else. We feel this campaign does this and significantly strengthens Leeds and Watford as Purple Flag status destinations.”

Kwame Tefe, Chairman at Watford BID, added: “We are thrilled to be partnering with CitiPark on this excellent promotion which aims to give back as well and protect the people of Watford, helping them to enjoy the fun of the World Cup while still staying safe behind the wheel.”
